Auto Repair Shop 101- Why What Type of Oil You Use Is Important

When you’re in need of an oil change, it’s important to replace the existing oil with the correct oil type. Here at All County Automotive Repair & Tire, we know exactly which type of oil (natural vs. synthetic oil, conventional oil, synthetic blend, full synthetic, high mileage, as well as the exact grade) your vehicle needs. While it is perfectly fine to upgrade to a better type of oil than what is suggested by the manufacturer, synthetic blend should not be used in a motor that requires full synthetic. You’ll also want to pay attention to time between changes, as all automobile manufacturers record a recommendation for how many miles or months that you can go before the detergents and other oil additives degrade.

What’s The Difference?

Typically, you will hear about 4 different types of oil when getting your oil change serviced, and All County Automotive thinks it’s important for our clients to know the difference. If you’re still not sure you can always stop into any of our locations in Jupiter, Tequesta, Stuart, and Palm City Florida.

  • Synthetic Motor Oil: This chemical compound is completely artificially made. Instead of using crude oil, synthetic oil can be created using many different raw materials such as petroleum. One of the positives of using this kind of oil is that it is less sensitive to temperature extremes, so it can still perform well at extremely high or low temperatures. As a result, if you choose to have an oil replacement service done with synthetic motor oil it tends to not evaporate as much, increasing the lifespan of your oil. It should also be noted that if your car has a turbocharger or a supercharger this can cause hot spots, so synthetic oil can help prevent issues in the oil passageway.
  • Synthetic Blend Motor Oil: This oil, as the name would suggest, is a combination of traditional oil and a synthetic oil. Different brands tend to have a different ratio of traditional oil to synthetic oil. This oil is typically a cheaper option than fully synthetic oil, but maintains many of the same benefits, so if you are someone who needs frequent oil changes, this may be the product for you.
  • High-Mileage Motor Oil: This oil is made specifically for cars with over 75,000 miles on the odometer. High-Mileage oils are usually a type of synthetic oil and can be fully synthetic or a blend.
  • Conventional Motor Oil: Conventional motor oils come in many grades and levels of quality. Typically, the only time you would seek out this type of oil is if you are performing an oil change in an older car. It is also a highly cost-effective option.
